Favorite track: Trigger Finger (Chevel Remix).
Two years ago Haunter Records released ZULI’s Trigger Finger EP. Undoubtedly one of his stronger collections of tracks, it was conceived by the Cairo-based producer like a personal take on the bass music continuum, suspended between the thrill of the chase and the depth of dark meditation. It was mainly the title track that turned the most heads, thanks to its wild pastiche of jungle as an unquiet game of capture and release. An absolute floor shaker, popping through the most evolved selections, making bodies shudder all around.
Now, ZULI has selected 8 artists to provide with their own interpretations of any of the tracks. First in line, Elvin Brandhi comes up with a complete demolition of “Don’t Fall out The Window”, reassembling it into a beautiful mess of haunting voices and granular noise. Lee Gamble is the first to confront “Trigger Finger”, redecorating it with icy sound design and sudden twists into pure digital noise. Then we got Heith with a melodic, otherworldly version of “Everyday”, while the rest of the lot all puts their hands and tools on the title track. Daniel Ruane assembles it around relentless barrages of drill-like kick drums. Chevel delivers a grungy, dungeon-rave version dunked in tape hiss. TSVI contaminates it with some heavy dembow drumming and blasts of white noise. Acre slows it down to a hypnotic mass of fractured beats and dubby haze. AYA speeds it up into an outright “chaos & bass” banger.

All the tracks are great but Stepper is the standout for me! pounding syncopated kicks, rolling handdrums and playful sample work, dancefloor destroyer. Jack G.
